Surf Season and Conditions

The best surf season runs from May to September when consistent southeast swells create ideal conditions. Wave heights typically range from 3-6 feet but can reach 10 feet during peak swells. The warm water (averaging 27°C) means no wetsuit is required, and multiple sessions per day are possible.

Learning to Surf

Numerous surf schools operate in Arugam Bay, offering lessons for all levels. The consistent small waves at Baby Point provide perfect conditions for beginners. Most schools provide boards, instruction, and ensure safety in the water. Private and group lessons are available.

The town maintains a relaxed, bohemian atmosphere. Beach Road is lined with surf shops, cafes serving healthy bowls, restaurants offering fresh seafood and international cuisine, and bars where surfers gather to watch the sunset and share stories of the day's sessions.

Nearby Kumana National Park offers excellent bird watching and wildlife viewing, particularly elephants and crocodiles. The lagoon behind the town is home to crocodiles (safely observed from distance) and numerous bird species. Early morning safaris provide opportunities to see elephants coming to drink.

The nearest airport is Mattala (90km away), though most visitors come overland from Colombo (320km). The journey offers scenic views of rural Sri Lanka and takes about 7-8 hours by bus or 6 hours by private vehicle.
